Rosacea

Rosacea is a complex multi faceted skin disorder. This skin presents itself with redness, swelling, papulopustules, inflammation that looks like a butterfly shape on the face (nose, cheeks, chin, and narrow margin on the forehead. Almost always rosacea presents itself initially on the nose and then spreads out. Rosacea can be mild to chronic.

There are many theories as to the cause of this debilitating disorder. The medical research agree that the underlying issue which is Rosacea is caused due to an autoimmune disorder, it is systemic, and the skin presents with overabundance of demodex brevis (mites that live in the sebaceous gland). They also agree that 46% of rosacea patients have small intestinal bacteria overgrowth or also known as SIBO.  Other researches have found that facial fatty acids play a role in maintaining skin barrier integrity, and found that patients with papulopustular rosacea have an abnormal fatty acid composition. Other research around rosacea found that the lymphatic vessels are also involved in the initial process of rosacea, which can trigger swelling.

The inflammation that causes rosacea is a million dollar question as each patient’s trigger to inflamed skin is different. Most common triggers to rosacea inflammation is the consumption, ingestion and exposure to the following:

  • Alcohol
  • Sugar
  • Gluten
  • Coffee / tea
  • Hot spicy food
  • UV radiation
  • Temperature variation
  • Exposure to skin irritants such as chemicals and chemical vapour
  • Stress and strong emotions

Since the list is long it is very important for us as dermal clinicians to investigate the cause so we can guide our clients to eliminate the trigger. We can then plan a skin care journey to manage the rosacea. One thing the client needs to understand is that rosacea can be managed rather than eradicated.

Our plan is to vastly minimise the demodex that is present in abundance on the surface of the skin.

Balance the fatty acid on the surface of the skin and maintain the integrity of the skin barrier.

Increase lymphatic circulation

The client will need to agree to do some digestive tune–up to balance the overgrowth of small intestinal bacterial growth.

Eliminate the triggers for each individual hence comprehensive skin analysis is extremely important and recommended.
